Canoe ClinicsWhen you receive your Advanced Canoe White Water Instructors Certification you will be qualified as a top level white water canoe instructor. You will have proven yourself to be an excellent canoeist in white water both tandem and solo. You are also a top level instructor of white water skills. You have strong judgement skills and therefore can avoid most emergencies. But when an emergency happens you are quick to know how to deal with it. Your first aid and rescue skills are strong. You've proven yourself to be an excellent outdoor chef. We are assuming that you already have these skills. This course is designed to help you with being able to articulate and communicate these skills to others.

Pre-requisite Skills

Since this is only a short school it is very important to come with the required skills in order to allow the school to run smoothly. These are the prerequisites:

You have the following Paddle Canada Certifications or equivalent skill or experience: Advanced Lake Paddling, Advanced White Water, you are a good swimmer and are not afraid of water; you have years of white water canoeing experience.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Testing Terms

Skills: rescues, eddy turn, peel out, s turn, front ferry, back ferry, jet ferry, side slip, front serf, side surf, canoe design, canoe repair and canoe outfitting. These skills need to be preformed in Class III rapids.

Any client showing their ability to teach, communicate and demonstrate the above skills will receive the Instructors Certification.

Description

Canoe ClinicsThese three days are set up to help you know better how to teach others how to plan, organize and go on their own canoe trip. Our plan is to paddle a section of the North Saskatchewan River and do our instruction there. We will work on skills and techniques. Canoe trip scenarios will get you involved in the teaching and learning process. It will be great fun and educational.

Testing Terms

This course is designed to teach you what you need to know to successfully and comfortably teach Introduction to Canoe Tripping.

Included in the course are: paddling techniques, map and compass, campsite selection, menu planning, fires and stoves, packing, knots and lashing, portaging, judgement skills, trip planning and preparation, teaching techniques, emergency preparation and techniques.

Safety: retrieving a swamped canoe, canoe over canoe rescue, self rescues, throw bag rescue, safety planning and preparation, trip logs, group management, equipment.

Theory: canoe heritage, canoe design & construction, route selectio n, equipment and clothing, canoe tripping gear, tool and repair kits, weather interpretation, environmental practices & concerns.

Description

Canoe ClinicsIf you are considering taking one of our moving water / white water courses, you need to perfect your strokes. Just paddling a canoe for ten years, or having a long list of canoe trips or rapids you've run isn't going to do it. To gain the technical skills for accurate manoeuvers in aggressive whitewater you need skilled instruction, feedback from an expert, and practise. The foundation of these skills is gained in the calm, controlled environment of flat water. The effort you spend building this foundation will pay big dividends when you hit the moving water skills courses! For those who are not interested in white water, this course will provide you the solid skills for travelling in shield country lakes safely and efficiently.

Course goals

Participants paddle with a partner on open lake waters and perform skills and manoeuvres with greater refinement and demonstrate confidence in open water environments. Candidates will develop greater awareness of environmental hazards and how to avoid/react to those hazards.

 

 

 

Testing Terms

Safety Knowledge: canoe over canoe rescue, know how to do rescue breathing both from land and from a canoe, organizing a group for maximum safety, rescue techniques.

Strokes: both solo and tandem strokes in the bow and stern.

Demonstrate: straight line paddling both on calm weather and wind, your ability to use different strokes, teaching techniques.

Other: canoe and environmental ethics, group management, judgement skills, emergency planning and procedures.

Description

Canoe ClinicsIf you are involved in teaching white water canoeing to friends, students or clients, this is a course for you. We will test your skills and spend time working out the best ways to teach these skills your students. The course will take place on the Churchill River just upstream from Devil Lake.

You are a good swimmer and are not afraid of water; you have your Paddle Canada Intermediate or Advanced White Water Certification in both tandem and solo or equivalent; you are in fairly good physical condition.

 

 

 

 

Testing Terms

This course is designed to teach you what you need to know to successfully and comfortably teach either Introduction or Intermediate White Water. You will be involved in helping to teach our Introduction/Intermediate White Water Course which runs July 4 to 8.

Included in the course are: front ferrying, eddy turns, S turns, back ferrying, entering & exiting a canoe, landing in a current, side slip, front surf, portaging, lining, tracking & wading, teaching techniques, safety, judgement skills, emergency planning and procedures.

Theory: canoe and environmental ethics, river running theory, reading white water, knowledge of river classification, canoe heritage, canoe design and construction, environmental practices & concerns, teaching theory, wilderness lifestyle.

Other Information

You will bring your own equipment. The group will look at each persons equipment and discuss the pros and cons of each item.
