This trip is a beautiful way to explore some of the very best whitewater on the Churchill, and serves double duty as a tripping course or refresher for big volume river canoe tripping.
This adventure both starts and ends at the Churchill River Canoe Outfitters base in Missinipe. The route passes through some of the most incredible rapids on the Churchill River! Little Devil and Great Devil Rapids, Sluice Rapids, Corner Rapids, Surf City, Red Neck Eddy, The Shelf, Staircase, Three Sisters, Murray Rapids -- to name just a few! Work on your whitewater skills (and/or your portaging skills!) -- this trip is suitable for all experience levels. It's a great way to build confidence and comfort with working your way through big rapids on a canoe trip.
This is a beautiful route for paddlers of all levels hoping to get some whitewater action as well as build the necessary skills for moving upstream and downstream in a big river canoe tripping environment. Lots of decision making, lots of opportunity for running, (swimming?!), or portaging some of the legendary rapids around Barker Lake. The route starts at Devil Lake and works up the Churchill River through Little Devil and Great Devil Rapids. From there we will enjoy a short stretch of upstream travel and a short portage into Bellows Lake for a side tour into the smaller waterways off the beaten path to enjoy the stellar Champagne Island campsite. After that it's into Barker Lake via Sluice Portage and camping at Corner Rapid for a day and a half of whitewater fun. On the last day with our newly honed river running skills we will paddle back to Devil Lake via Murray Rapid (a Class II+/III rapid), Mosquito (a Class III rapid bypassed via a short portage) or the Three Sisters /(Class I with a very short portage at the end over the Class III Staircase Rapid).
